AI I Ching Diviner

With the advent of Generative AI, many I Ching divination sites appeared.

I too created one as an experiment which I called Yishi (易士). You can find it at https://yishi.castingiching.com (you will need a free ChatGPT account to access it).

There are two ways of using it:

  • Just ask your question. Yishi will generate a response using the yarrow stalks method and will provide an interpretation. For example:
"Should I move out of this city?"

  • Provide the answer you obtaind with another method. You just add the number of the received hexagrams and the moving lines before the question. For example, if you asked the same question and got the hexagram 18 with the 3rd and 5th lines changing, you can write:
"18.3.5 Should I move out of this city?"

You will get an explanation of the meaning of the received hexagram in the the context of your question.

Don't take it too literally! Yishi is not meant to replace your own reading, it's just a suggestion to supplement your understanding of the response. It might lead to consider a different perspective.

WARNING: generative AI are unpredicatble, I have no control on the output and I make no claim on the correcteness of the outcome. Consider it as an experiment on the perceptions of AI minds.

Five I Ching Cards
This set of five Cards is inspired to the the traditional five elements (or five phases) and the relations between them.

To cast a line you shuffle the five cards and place three of them as shown in the two examples below:

Starting from the red symbol and following the connections between the symbols on the other cards, you'll arrive at the line you got as an outcome. Chaging lines are in red.

The two examples above show a non-changing yin line (8) on the left and a changing moving line (6) on the right

The probability is extremely close to the yarrow stalks one ( ± 0.42%).

Two Coins
Another method, with only two coins, I learned from Clarity

  1. Throw the two coins.
If they both show head count 2 otherwise count 3
  2. Throw the two cons again
Count 2 for each head and 3 for each tail.
  3. Sum it all up and draw the resulting line according the following table:
    6 7 8 9
  4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 other five times drawing the resulting lines from the bottom to the top of the hexagram.

Probabilities

This method generates lines with the same probabilities as the yarrow stalk method because the odds of getting 2 in the first throw are 1/4.

For each of the possible eight outcomes, probabilities are:

2+2+2 = 6  1/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/16
2+2+3 = 7  1/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/16
2+3+2 = 7  1/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/16
2+3+3 = 8  1/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/16
3+2+2 = 7  3/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 3/16
3+2+3 = 8  3/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 3/16
3+3+2 = 8  3/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 3/16
3+3+3 = 9  3/4 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 3/16

 Meaning that:

    Prob(6) = 1/16
    Prob(8) = 7/16 = 1/16 + 3/16 + 3/16
    Prob(7) = 5/16 = 1/16 + 1/16 + 3/16
    Prob(9) = 3/16
    Prob(yin) = Prob(yang) = 1/2

Seven Cards (reprise)

After some test with the Seven Cards method that I posted some time ago, I decided to design a variant with larger (tarot sized) cards. I don't believe I can get any simpler than this.

I also decided to take an extra step asking an artist to draw two original illustrations for the two sides of the card. I went with the traditional theme Dragon/Tiger.

I'm extremely pleased of the work she did and I'm sure you'll like it too. You can find more of the artist's work on her Instagram account,

Below, the two sides of each card:

You'll use seven of such cards but their use is slightly different from the previous method; you place them as shown below:

and the line in the low left corner is the line you recieved. If there are two identical ideograms (one red, the other black) at the bottom center, then it's a moving line.

You stack the cards one on top of the other to record the lines until you will receive the full hexagram (and the related one) as shown below:

I'll probably print them trhough a print on demand service to get the feeling of using them for real.
